UNDERSTANDING HELPING VERBS

Before studying question words it is necessary to have knowledge of helping verbs. Helping verbs are the building blocks of the question words. Without the proper knowledge of helping verb one cannot frame a proper Question.

Let us understand helping verb:

Helping verb determines the state and nature of the sentence. The sentence will be in present, past or future time, it is all decided by helping verbs.

Helping verb is found in most of the sentences in English language. Example of helping verbs is as follows:



 Main Helping verb:

is, am, are, were, was, do, did, does

Secondary helping verb:

                  has, have, will, would, could, had, shall,                          

can, must, may, might,should,

कार्य होना या करना

It is used with plural subject except “I” in present/future time

I do work hard.

में मेहनत तो करता हूँ |

Did

कार्य हुवा था

It is used with singular and plural subject only for describing past action. Did is always followed by verb1 form

I did eat my breakfast.

We did attend the lecture.

मैंने अपना ब्रेकफास्ट किया तो था

 

हमने अपना लेक्चर तो अटेंड किया था |

 

Does

तो है

It is used with singular subject for present time  

Sam does go to college.

सैम कॉलेज तो जाता है |

 

Has

होना या पाना

It is used with singular subject for present time. It shows possession.

He has a car

 

उसके पास कार है |

 

 

Have

होना या पाना

It is used with plural subject except “I” for present time. It shows possession.

I have a dog.

We have many toys.

मेरा पास कार है |

हमारे पास बहुत से खिलोना है |

 

 

Had

पास था

It is used with singular and plural subject for past time

Ramesh had a Avon bicycle.

We had a house.

रमेश के पास एवन साइकिल थी |

हमारे पास घर था |

Can

सकता / क्षमता 

It is used for ability/possibility

What can I do for you?

में आप के लिए क्या कर सकता हूँ |

Could

सकता /सकता था

It is used for making polite request or past possibility

I could have done this work on time.

में समय पे यह काम कर सकता था |

Shall

जरूर  से मगर थोड़ा कम आत्मा विश्वाश से

It is used for showing confirmation or possibility

I shall go to Mumbai tomorrow.

कल में मुंबई जाऊँगा |

It is used for future time for showing willingness
