| USING APOSTROPHE IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE |
Apostrophe is used in showing possessiveness of the Noun. It shows a certain item or thing belongs to somebody. It express ownership.
Let us understand with the help of an example. Suppose a man name Andrew has a car and it is beautiful and stylish. One say this sentence using an apostrophe. For example,
Andrew's car is beautiful and stylish. एंड्रू की कार
Similarly, Veronica's house, India's captain Dhoni, America's President, etc. America का प्रेसीडेंट
Following are the Rules of applying an apostrophe to a Noun:
Rule 1:
IF NOUN WORD IS ENDING WITH “S” USE APOSTROPHE
For example,
BOYS’ HIGH SCHOOL -
GIRLS’ DEGREE
COLLEGE -
Rule 2:
Noun ending with the following words:
MEN'S ROOM - लड़कों का रूम
WOMEN'S COLLEGE - महिलाओं का कॉलेज
Rule 3:
If Noun is ending with the alphabet "s" and has a hissing sound at the end then alphabet "s" is applied for making the noun Possessive.
For example,
1. Jesus' sacrifice
2. Peace' sake
3.Goodness' sake
4.James' car
etc,
Rule 4:
With Possessive Pronouns such as ours,theirs,his,hers,yours,Yours faithfully,ours college, etc apostrophe is not applied in the following manner.
For example,'
Your's faithfully --- Wrong
Yours faithfully --- right
Our's ---- wrong
his's ---- wrong
Rule 5:
Lifeless objects that has no life in it has no Apostrophe.
For example,
table,pen,computer,mobile, television, calculator, laptop,etc.
Pen's cap -- Wrong
Cap of the Pen -- Right
Laptop's Price -- Wrong
Price of the laptop -- Right
Rule 6:
The following pronoun takes an apostrophe.
somebody,everybody,everyone,anybody,someone
For example,
1. everybody's responsibilities
2. somebody's work
3. everyone's duty
4. everyone's duty
5.anybody's problem
Rule 6:
Lifeless objects that are Personified.
For example,
1.Nature's fury
2.Moon's beauty
3.Nature's love
4.Earth's protection
